U.S. stock indexes closed sharply lower on Tuesday after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell told Congress the central bank will likely need to raise interest rates more than previously expected as it seeks to rein in stubbornly high inflation. Oil prices extended their losses, falling more than 3% on the strengthening dollar and worries over dampening demand.

The dollar was riding high on Wednesday, flung to three-month peaks when Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell surprised investors by warning that interest rates might need to go up faster and higher than expected to rein in inflation. "If the hot data continues to roll into March, the U.S. dollar is going to have a very firm tailwind behind it," said IG Markets analyst Tony Sycamore in Sydney.
