Banking stocks decreased due to strong net selling by foreign investors such as HDB -2.6%, VCB -1.9%, STB -1.4%, VPB -0.3%.

Japanese stocks raced to a record peak on Thursday, breaking levels last seen in 1989 as cheap valuations and corporate reforms lure foreign money looking for alternatives to battered Chinese markets. The Nikkei's rally has defied a recession in Japan, wars in Europe and the Middle East, a global inflation shock and rising rates worldwide. The index is up almost 17% this year after surging 28% in 2023, when it was the best performing Asian major bourse.

Overnight interbank interest rates suddenly increased sharply in yesterday's trading session, this was the second consecutive increase session. Yesterday, a bank urgently borrowed more than VND946 billion from SBV with a term of 7 days and an interest rate of 4%. Interbank interest rates increased again and transaction turnover remained at a high level, showing that the demand for liquidity is still high even though the peak period approaching the Lunar New Year has passed.

CTG: VietinBank has just announced to continue auctioning Marina Hotel's debt with an asking price of VND698 billion. In the second auction this year, Vietinbank discounted 10% of the debt. As of January 16, 2024, Marina Hotel JSC still owes Vietinbank VND646.4 billion, including VND496 billion in principal and more than VND160 billion in interest.

VJC said it had agreed to a provisional deal to order 20 A330neo wide-body airliners from Europe's Airbus. The multi-billion-dollar commitment, which confirmed an earlier report by Reuters, was announced at the Singapore Airshow, making it one of the biggest deals so far at Asia's largest aerospace event.
