- US stocks fell sharply on Wednesday (May 12), when hotter-than-expected inflation data led to a massive sell-off, especially in technology stocks. Ending Wednesday's session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 681.50 points (or 2%) to 33,587.66 points, marking its worst session since January 2021. The S&P 500 index dropped 2.1% to 4,063.04 points, also recorded the strongest drop since January 2021. The Nasdaq Composite Index lost 2.7% to 13,031.68 points, bringing the total decline so far this week to more than 5%.
