Most Asian stock markets declined on December 18 due to negative spillover from the sell-off on Wall Street. Investor sentiment has been weighed down by concerns over the effectiveness of massive spending on artificial intelligence (AI), as well as signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve that it may pause its interest-rate cutting cycle. Japan saw one of the sharpest drops, with the Nikkei 225 falling more than 1%, driven by a steep correction in SoftBank Group, which at one point plunged over 7%.
