US stocks fell in the session on April 23 as technology stocks fell and oil prices remained above the $100 per barrel mark. Shares of IBM and ServiceNow fell more than 8% and nearly 18%, respectively, after the companies announced their latest quarterly results. Other software stocks also fell. For example, Microsoft lost about 4%. Palantir Technologies fell more than 7%, while Oracle fell about 6%.

Oil prices rose as tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalated with the U.S. and Iran imposing blockades. According to CNBC, Iran continues to require ships to get permission from the country before passing through the Strait of Hormuz, while U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that the U.S. has full control over the shipping lane. Trump emphasized that ships need to receive permission from the U.S. Navy to be able to circulate.
