- US stocks recovered on Wednesday (May 5), when strong earnings results and economic optimism pushed the Dow Jones to a record high. Closing Wednesday's session, the Dow Jones advanced 97.31 points (or 0.3%) to 34,230.34, a record-high close. The S&P 500 index edged up 0.1% to 4,167.59 points. However, the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4 percent to 13,582.42, as shares of Amazon, Netflix and Facebook all fell more than 1 percent.
