The Dow Jones industrial average closed 152.84 points higher, or 0.5%, at 28,363.66 points. Sometimes during the session, the Dow fell 170 points. The S&P 500 rose 0.5 percent to close at 3,453.49 points and the Nasdaq Composite rose 0.2 percent to 11,506.01 points.
