The S&P 500 and Dow closed lower on Tuesday, pressured by a modest rise in Treasury yields as investors assessed the timing and size of any Federal Reserve interest rate cuts in 2024 ahead of inflation data this week. Boeing weakened for a second straight session as the plane maker, main U.S. air regulator and U.S. airlines were still wrangling over 737 MAX 9 inspection guidelines that would address safety lapses after airlines found several aircraft with loose parts.

Oil prices climbed around 2% on Tuesday as the Middle East crisis and a Libyan supply outage pared the previous day's heavy losses. Prices drew support from the closure of Libya's 300,000 barrels per day Sharara oilfield, one of its largest, which has been a frequent target for local and broader political protests, and Middle East tensions.
