- Excited by the new news about the stimulus package, the Dow Jones sometimes broke out more than 400 points, the S&P 500 set a new peak. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 185.28 points, or 0.6%, to 29,823.92 points. The 30-stock index rose more than 400 points at the intraday high. The S&P 500 rose 1.1 percent, or 40.82 points, to 3,662.45 points, marking a record high at the close. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.3 percent, or 156.37 points, to 12,355.11, also closing at a record high.
