S&P 500 rose for the fifth consecutive session on Friday (May 16), capping a strong week of gains. At the close of trading on May 16, S&P 500 advanced 0.70% to 5,958.38 points, Nasdaq Composite added 0.52% to 19,211.10 points, and Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 331.99 points (or 0.78%) to 42,654.74 points. Friday’s gains helped Dow Jones turn positive for the year 2025.

In the third draft of the decree on administrative penalties in the monetary and banking sector, recently published by the State Bank of Vietnam, it is proposed that individuals or entities engaged in gold bar trading without a license may face fines ranging from 300 to 400 million VND.

VN-Index snapped a four-day winning streak as foreign investors returned to net selling. Proprietary trading by securities companies also reversed to a net sell of more than VND237 billion, focusing on VPB (VND427 billion), VFG (VND95 billion), VIB, and MBB (each VND13 billion). On the contrary, net buying was concentrated in VCB (VND174 billion), HPG (VND54 billion), and BMP (VND49 billion).
