U.S. stocks fell on Thursday (October 16), erasing earlier gains, led by declines in banking stocks due to concerns over bad debts. Investors also faced lingering worries about the U.S.–China trade tensions and the government shutdown. Shares of regional banks Zions and Western Alliance hit session lows as major indexes reversed downward. Zions plunged 13% after reporting heavy losses tied to bad loans from several borrowers, while Western Alliance dropped 11% following allegations that one of its clients had committed fraud.
