- The S&P 500 hit a new record high on Thursday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average wiping out a two-month decline amid strong corporate earnings and year-end optimism. Closing the session, the S&P 500 index gained 0.3% to close a record high of 4,549.78 points. This index also touched a session high of 4,551.44 points. The Nasdaq Composite added 0.6 percent to 15,215.70. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones index dropped 6.26 points to 35,603.08 points, pressured by the deep decline of IBM shares.
