The S&P 500 and Nasdaq scored their biggest daily percentage gains since Feb. 22 on Wednesday as chip stocks rallied and the Federal Reserve kept U.S. interest rates unchanged while signaling possible easing in September if inflation cools. Nvidia jumped nearly 13%, helped by a rosy 2024 sales forecast for artificial intelligence chips by peer Advanced Micro Devices, whose shares also gained 4.3%.

The U.S. dollar was soft on Thursday after the Federal Reserve opened the door for an interest rate cut in September. Oil prices rose in early Asian trading on Thursday, extending strong gains in the previous session after the killing of a Hamas leader in Iran raised the threat of a wider Middle East conflict and on signs of strong oil demand in the U.S.
