S&P 500 rose on Tuesday (May 13), officially turning positive for the year as the index continued to build on strong gains from the previous session, driven by easing U.S.-China trade tensions. At the close of trading on May 13, S&P 500 gained 0.73% to 5,886.55 points, while Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.61% to 19,010.09 points. In contrast, Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 269.67 points (or 0.64%) as UnitedHealth shares tumbled nearly 18%.

U.S. inflation unexpectedly cooled in April, rising only 2.3% year-over-year, below the 2.4% forecast by Dow Jones. This figure is inching closer to the Federal Reserve's target of 2% and marks the lowest increase since February 2021.
