US stocks turned lower from their peaks due to higher technology stocks and oil prices, as well as a hotter-than-expected April inflation report. In April, the consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.6%, bringing the year-on-year inflation rate to 3.8%, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Although the monthly increase in headline inflation was in line with forecasts, economists surveyed by Dow Jones forecast a 3.7% increase over the same period. This is the highest inflation figure since May 2023.

Crude oil prices adjusted slightly in the morning session on Wednesday (May 13) after rising for the third consecutive session the previous day, as deep disagreements between the US and Iran over a proposal to end the conflict in the Middle East raised concerns that supply disruptions are lingering.
