Position: is the fact that the investor is participating in one side of the contract.
BUY POSITION (Long): Investors who buy the contract will have a long position. To close the position, the investor must sell the contract or hold the position until maturity.
SELL POSITION (Short): Investors who short the contract will have a short position. To close the position, the investor must repurchase the contract or hold the position until maturity.
Investors need to open a corresponding position to the currently held position when they want to end the currently held position. Positions are automatically closed when the futures contract reaches maturity.
